Why TMT Iron Rods are Essential in Construction Process
Professional builders no longer use local iron rods to reinforce concrete for all their construction projects. This is because of the problems associated with local iron rods. They do not have sufficient high yield strength, ductility and easily rust away. These negative factors expose structures to leakage during rain, frequent repairs as a result of constant damage, thereby making them unsafe and unreliable.
Thermo-Mechanically-Treated (TMT) iron rods are unarguably the solution to these problems. TMT iron rods are produced through a unique metallurgical process called Thermo-Mechanical-Treatment. This unique manufacturing process results in production of iron rods with high strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and perfect elongation. These properties make TMT iron rods meet the requirement for high loading capacity of modern construction. They have, therefore, become the cornerstone of modern city life.
They are one of the most important materials widely used in the construction industry. TMT iron rods are of high demand because of their high yield strength derived from their low carbon content. They also impact longer durability to all kinds of civil construction such as dams, bridges, high-rise apartments, flyovers, concrete roads, underground structures, and other civil engineering structure. They permit aesthetic design due to the flexibility of their properties. They do not have any defects or surface cracks and they are better at resisting stress caused by seismic activities. Therefore, TMT iron rods ensure safety during earthquakes and other natural disasters.
The Grades of TMT Iron Rods
The grade of TMT iron rods is measured by the strength and rigidity. The available grades are:
- Fe-415
- Fe-500
- Fe-550
- Fe-600
‘Fe’ stands for ‘iron’ while the number indicates the level of stress to be applied to deform it. In some cases, TMT iron rods may have letters at the end, e.g. Fe 500D. The ‘D’ indicates that it is more ductile than its predecessor Fe 500. The grades have varying strength and the higher the number of the grade, the stronger the iron rod. Iron rods with a higher grade are more suitable for the core of structures and large construction projects such as airports and harbours while those with lower grades are used in construction of decorative structures.
TMT Grades and their Applications
Each grade of TMT iron rods has its properties and application. This means it is very essential to choose the right TMT iron rod based on its application and usage.

- Fe-500
- Fe–550
- F–600
